History Of Glowsticks

Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

The history of glow sticks is over 40 years old when Edwin Chandross, a chemist at Bell Labs, invented the glow technology which used chemical energy to emit light. This was quite an achievement as at that point either battery or electrical power was used as an energy source for emission of light.

Based on Chandross’ work, many scientists took on the task for further refining the process. However, the patent for Chemical Light Device is registered in the US Patent in the name of inventor Richard Taylor Van Zandt.

Glow sticks are a single use device can come in various different sizes and shapes in translucent plastic tubes. One of the chemicals used in the device are contained within a brittle inner case surrounding by another chemical needed for the reaction. When the brittle case is broken the two chemicals combine and produce light through a chemical reaction known as chemoluminescence.

Today, glow sticks are used the world over as a source of light and millions of people all over the world use these colorful sticks. It is believed that nearly 15 million glow sticks are used by the United States Department of Defense each year.

Some of varied uses of glowsticks are:

-Glowsticking is a dance form that has gained widespread popularity. Glow sticks are used for fun and entertainment in dance clubs, concerts and parties especially ravers. If there is a pop culture association with glowsticks, it’s with the teen ravers crowd.

-They are commonly being associated with festivals and holidays. Glowsticks are used extensively during the Mid-Autumn Festival in Hong Kong. For Westerners where Halloween is celebrated, you will find parents and kids alike using illuminesent lights when trick or treating. In addition to adding to the spooky atmosphere from the eerie light produced by glow sticks, it allows parents and drivers to see where children are wandering about much more effectively than reflective tape.

-Besides all this fun, glow sticks have an extremely practical use. They are waterproof and can withstand high pressure. In addition, they are disposable and inexpensive. That is why divers, campers and military use these sticks as a source of light and as markers.

If there is an earthquake, these sticks come very handy and are a safe source of light. Even in places where there are explosives, the sticks can be used as they do not use batteries or electrical filaments and there is no worry about causing sparks.

Glowsticks saw a huge surge in popularity in the 1980s, but even today they are just as popular. In order to get the best bang for your buck, it is advisable to get a stick that lasts. Cheap glow sticks fade out rather quickly. The better the quality the stick, the longer and stronger it will last. Good quality glow sticks will usually last for 12 to 24 hours.

Improve Your Golf Game with Better Clubs

Tuesday 1 July 2008 @ 1:07 am

swings, putts and drives for your golf missed shots and mishaps? Well, no matter how much time and effort you have been spending on the practice greens, you will be unable to reach your goal if you are using inadequate or broken items of golf equipment.

To really improve your game, you should consider the following golf tips that relate to checking your golf equipment’s condition and quality.

If you are constructing your set of golf clubs by purchasing pre-owned golf clubs and putters then make sure that you inspect them carefully before you hand over any cash. Inspect all parts of the golf club or putter, for wear and damage, including the club head, the shaft, and the grip. Another golf tip that will reduce your handicap is to make sure that the clubs form a matched set. You don’t want to mix and match golf clubs and putters if you want to achieve consistency in your game. Most importantly make sure that you look up the price of new club or putter first, so that you know if the used club is good value for money. You might also want to check beforehand, the cost of repairing a club so that you can take this into account as well. A golf tip for any golfer who is contemplating re-gripping his clubs: Take great care as the golf club grip is the only point of contact on the club that you can use to influence your shot. This is even more important when it comes to golf putters. So before undertaking any replacement of a grip, find out the core grip of the club together with your hand grip size.

To determine your golf club’s core size grip, measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft that you’re going to re-grip. The grip’s core diameter should be the same as the diameter of the shaft. To find your hand grip size, select from the available size grips which comprise of regular, mid-size, oversize and jumbo. Use only the best quality re-gripping materials that you can get, in order to ensure the optimum performance for your golf clubs.

Another tip for better golf is that using wrongly fitted clubs will will not be helpful to playing a good round of golf. A good golfer must consider his or her body type in selecting the best-fitting equipment to support and deliver the backswings efficiently. It is important to avoid too steep an angle in a backswing and this can be kept in check by selecting correctly fitting golf clubs.

A custom golf club fitting may be a better option than simply buying ready made golf clubs. Getting a custom fitting for your golf clubs is one golf tip that translates to a very worthwhile investment. You will play a better gameof golf, you will putt better on the green and be less likely to pull any muscles if you invest in custom made golf clubs.

It is the unique build and shape of each person that is the reason for the growth in this way of buying new golf clubs and putters. A custom fitting will produce golf clubs that are built to specifically suit the height, strength and swing characteristics of the golfer as well as being designed for the optimum club head speed.

The type of club shaft also has an impact on determining your success in the game. Shafts are no longer made of wood. There’s a choice between a steel club shaft and a graphite-made club shaft. The golf tip here is to determine which of the two types of golf club shaft will benefit your particular game. The steel club shafts tend to be preferred by professional golfers while the graphite shafts have are popular with women, senior players and beginners. It should also be noted that graphite shafts cost more than their steel counterparts.

Another golf tip that could help you play a winning game is that the clubs and putters that form the core of your golf bag must match your skill level. Different levels of skill will benefit from different types of golf clubs. Do not use any golf club or putter that comes into your possession. Take care with your selection of golf club and build a set of clubs that is ideally suited to you as an individual. Sacrifice quantity for quality if you have to and over time, build up a quality set of custom clubs and putters.

And as a final golf tip, don’t ever forget about the maximum number of golf clubs that your bag is allowed to hold. You are permitted to only carry 14 golf clubs in your bag. Absolutely no more. Even the professionals have been known to get this one wrong!

As well as your level of skill, your selection of each golf club in your golf bag and your familiarity with using it will have a direct impact on your handicap. From golf driver to golf putter, the knowledge, selection and familiarity with your golf clubs is an important part of your golf game success.

A good mixture of the right shots and a good selection of golf clubs, putters and equipment will ensure that you will turn into the best golf player you could ever be.

Scrapbooking for the Beginner

Monday 2 June 2008 @ 1:06 am

Do you want to start your own scrapbook? You’ve heard all about it on TV shows, read it in magazines, and your friends are already on their way to creating their own personal creations. So what exactly is it and how do you get started?

First of all, you need to understand that a scrapbook is not like a photo album or a diary, where you can put items arranged in chronological order. It’s more like a collection of things that represent the ‘non-eventual’ aspects of your life, like dreams, goals, relationships, etc. A scrapbook helps you record the smaller but nonetheless important things in your life that otherwise wouldn’t be included in an album.

Before getting started on a scrapbook, there are a few things to consider. Ask yourself, what kind of scrapbook do you want to make? Should you make one that follows important events in your life? Or will it be focused on a specific idea or theme? For instance, even if you have hundreds of family photos stored over the years, you might not want to include every one of them in your book. Why not create one instead for all the places you’ve gone to? Remember also that writing down your thoughts, memories, and feelings is as important as the pictures that go with them, perhaps even more. Pictures tell only half of the story; without the narration that portrays the emotions and memories behind every image, their real meaning could be lost. The words you write down will also serve as a guide to more accurately portray who you really are when read by later generations.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time working on your scrapbooks. I know people who complain that they would like to start scrapbooking, but they feel that it would demand a lot of their time. Well, they’re completely wrong. Scrapbooking can be enjoyed whether you spend 5 hours on it every day or 1 hour a week; it doesn’t matter at all! You don’t have to spend a lot of time to enjoy this hobby. Forget about the complex decorations. Don’t get caught up in the decorations and the artwork that you may see in other people’s scrapbooks. The most important elements of any scrapbook are the pictures and the stories behind them. I know several people who worry about the beautiful artwork that they see on other scrapbooks. They fail to truly experience the enjoyment that this hobby is supposed to be all about.

A lot of information can be found on the Internet about scrapbooking. You can also find great scrapbook stores for everything you’ll ever need. If you feel like you don’t have the commitment or the passion to indulge in scrapbooking, stop fussing about it. This is a hobby, not a job. It can be a lifelong pursuit, or just a vehicle to capture all the things that make up the real you.

Is It Your Cup of Tea?

Friday 4 April 2008 @ 4:04 pm

If you told somebody in this day and age that you think your destiny can be viewed from the bottom of your coffee mug or tea cup they would probably say!’you can what?’ But don’t worry; they would definitely contemplate your sanity. The crazier part is that people have actually welcomed tea leaf reading as a believable fortune telling ritual for centuries. This is probably due to the fact that psychiatrists were not administering psych evaluations and tossing out medications to take care of delusions and stupidity at its finest. Tea leaf readings have origins leading back to primarily China and other parts of Asia. In ancient times it isn’t all that hard to believe that sane people could be sucked into this practice because there wasn’t a window such as the internet or television to help you see how crazy and unlikely to be real a practice like this is, I mean come on, people still ‘knew’ the world was flat. So who could to say that the left over tasteless crap at the bottom of your cup wasn’t a window to the universe? At the very most a tea leaf reading session should be done only by people that are less than gullible and see it as something of a hobby or social session for fun, not somebody who uses it as a ‘crystal ball to view the future’ or has Ms. Cleo on speed dial. If you won’t be biting off your fingernails during the preparation process because you just can’t wait to find out what lays ahead on the road of life for you, then by all means you should invite some friends over, boil some water and throw some loose tea leaves in without the use of a strainer, and find a comfy room to take a load off in and serve some hot tea. Take a few moments to take in the pleasant aroma and sip the tea while having healthy conversation. For giggles, you can leave a little tea in your cup to swirl around and see where the tea leaves settle. With very little light-hearted research you can find out the tea leaf meanings of the settled leaves and reveal what ‘the future holds’.

Tea Leaf Reading can be a pleasant and relaxing experience for friends.

The History Of French Violins

Thursday 3 April 2008 @ 4:04 pm

Among the most sought-after old violins are those from French craftsmen. Some of the more famous French luthiers are J.B. Vuillaume, Nicolas Lupet and Charles Francois Gand. Let’s have a look at the lives of these three luthiers and the methods they used in their work.

J.B. Vuillame was born in Mirecourt in 1798. He worked with Francois Chanot and also had an association with Pique. Vuillaume soon found that old violins were favored over new ones. Thus, he produced a wonderful copy of a Stradivari violin with its worn appearance and even replicated it down to exact copies of Stradivari labels. Moreover, his copies were varnished with a varnish very similar in color and texture to Stradivarius violins. To further enhance the illusion, Vuillaume traveled throughout Tyrol and Silesia in search of old wood and old furniture of any kind. To this day, some feel the famous “Messiah Strad” that traditionally has been attributed to Antonio Stradivari is actually, truth be known, one of Vuillaume’s copies, pointing out the above as well as well as other evidence including the fact that some of its characteristics are more notably of the French than Italian styles. The mysterious violin’s true identity remains one of the violin world’s most intriguing and controversial enigmas to this day.

Known as the “French Stradivarius,” Nicolas Lupot was born in 1758, and established a workshop in Paris 40 years later in 1798. In 1815, just short of 60 years of age, he was appointed violin maker to the King; the following year, he was appointed to the Conservatoire de Paris. He died at the age of 66, in 1824. Lupot’s instruments are widely considered to imitate those of Stradivarius more closely than anyone else.

1802 marks the year when Charles Francoise Gand became an apprentice of Nicolas Lupot in Paris, France. Lupot’s violins are works of art, known world-wide for his artistry in the instruments’ flamed wood backs, and his uniquely brilliant and textured finishes. Lupot was uniquely not only a violin craftsman and artisan, but was also known as a good player of the instrument.

Ye Old Violin Shop features dozens of French violins, as well as violins from Italian, German, and other luthiers. Be sure to visit the new violin forum too!

Old Violin Shop: Things To Consider When Choosing One

Monday 24 March 2008 @ 4:04 pm

The new player and the experienced hand are in similar situations searching for a violin online. Both must consider a number of questions: expense, value, physical proximity and how well made is the instrument. The prospective purchaser should also look into what options are available, and what extras might be included in the selling price. If quality and few hassles are your goal, consider an old violin shop. Such establishments stay in business because they have top notch violins for sale.

With any acquisition the primary and most important thought is that of price. When one shops for a violin the fee may be great. The price of a violin may range from as little as one hundred dollars up to one million dollars. The instrument you decide on will likely be somewhere in the middle. An inexpensive violin isn’t worth all the pain and suffering that you have to deal with. For a respectable instrument you must anticipate paying a minimum of $1,000.00. If you don’t wish to invest this much, you should give careful consideration to choosing a different instrument to learn.

When looking for an old violin shop online, you could be connected with stores a great distance away. If you need to ship the instrument over long distances, this additional cost could be outrageous. Also the instrument could be damaged. Violins are sensitive to heat and cold and humidity. If you are going to ship the instrument you will definitely want to buy insurance. Otherwise, look for an old violin shop that is near to your location so that you can go and pick it up.

If you wish to learn to play any musical instrument then you should always go for a good quality instrument. A bad quality instrument is bound to have a terrible sound. It also has a greater risk of breaking and slipping out of tune. You should take into account the price of the instrument before short-listing any instrument. Quality is a very critical factor so you should not compromise on it.

When purchasing a fiddle, many factors should be taken into consideration. For instance, the inclusion of the case and bow in the sale price should be determined. Cases and bows for violins can be very expensive and the prices for these may be negotiated separately, making a good price too good to be true.

The violin is an intricate instrument. It is very delicate and sensitive to its environment. It is possible to buy a few violins that are good quality but are broken in some way or another and take the pieces to a repair shop and get them mended together. This is a lot of work, but could be a cheaper alternative.

Dan Wright operates Ye Olde Violin Shoppe, an online version of an old violin shop that features a huge selection of violins for sale. Whether acoustic or electric, you’ll find superb examples of Italian, German, French and other quality made fiddles for sale with new violins daily. Join our new violin forum…whether a new enthusiast or long-time player, all are welcome!

Stradivarius Violins: The Most Copied Of All Italian Violins

Friday 7 March 2008 @ 8:03 am

All of the violin world - even young children - are familiar with Antonio Stradivari and the violins that bear his “Stradivarius” mark. The reputation of the Stradivarius violin comes from its visual and musical beauty. They are exquisite instruments capable of equally amazing music, and the remarkable prices that collectors will pay for them is a testament to the high regard that the world pays these fine works of art.

The Italian violin was the premier instrument for many centuries for all who play strings, and Italy produced some of the most skilled violin makers in history. All violinists know about Amati and Guarneri, but Stradivari is without doubt the most notable and respected and his instruments still the most coveted. He was in fact a student of Amati himself, but exceeded even that great a master.

Stradivarius violins are accompanied by other Stradivari instruments in some professional combos and orchestras for he also made violas, cellos, guitars, and harps. It is estimated that about 70% of the instruments he built still survive and almost all are playable and in regular use. Considering that Stradivari died in 1737, survival of that many instruments is just more verification of the quality.

Two main things distinguished the Stradivarius violins and other instruments from those of other luthiers. (A luthier is a maker of any stringed instrument, and the word comes from the root for “lute.”) One was construction, with the style of the arching in the curves of the body and case being an innovation. Stradivari also changed the thick and thin parts of the body to a precise measurement he evolved for the best sound, and his instruments are remarkably similar in sound to each other as a result.

It has long been believed that the protective varnish coating on the Stradivarius is the key to its uniqueness. It’s renowned creator developed a brand new formula, which other makers of stringed instruments have been attempting to copy ever since. While they continue to strive to achieve his results, their attempts at analyzing his ingenious techniques are stymied by their understandable unwillingness to risk destroying one of his rare instruments in the process.

Many famous violinists would not turn down the chance to place a Stradivarius violin even though they may favor an instrument maker. Owning a Stradivarius is becoming unlikely now than before with recent prices over $3.5 million at auctions. Since there are many fake ones out there, the Stradivarius violins are authenticated.

The genuine Stradivarius creations bear a label reading, “Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno, which means “Antonio Stradivari of Cremona made this in the year,” with the number of the appropriate year filled in. However, counterfeits usually say this too in order to simulate authenticity! Beginning music students generally own a low-cost instrument which may bear that same legend, but which also carry a small disclaimer such as “replica” or “copy of” so as to differentiate them. There are even strict regulations in some nations as to the language that must appear on these copies.

Ye Old Violin Shop features every type of violin for sale. Whether acoustic or electric, you’ll find superb examples from Italian, German, French and other violin makers. If you’re a student and seeking a fine Italian violin, be sure to consider one of the fine copies of Stradivarius violins available.

Amati Violin: Legendary Instruments From Italy

Friday 7 March 2008 @ 8:03 am

Music allows us to connect with our inner self. It calms our mind and brings us to a closer level with our soul. There is a wide range of musical instruments. There are guitars, drums, pianos, flutes, saxophones and many other instruments that create melodies that enrapture us all. There is nothing that is more overwhelming than to listen to a beautiful song that reaches inside us and touches our soul.

However, there is one instrument that especially creates this rapturous connection. These instruments are violins. When we hear about violins, the first name that we think of is the world famous Amati violins. These violins refer to an Italian family of violin makers. The family, from beginning to now in the context of the violin runs from Andrea Amati, Antonio and Girolamo Amati, to Nicolo Amati and so on.

The precision and craftsmanship of the Amati family of violin-makers is unmatched even today when technology has replaced hands at many places. An “Amati violin” does not need words or advertisements to boast of its supremacy and quality; it does it all with a mere movement of the bow over the strings.

The luthiers of Italy are popular throughout the world. When Andrea Amati made the first violin in his family, little did he know what the future had in store for him and for his descendants. Such is the craze of the fiddles made by this family, that in Italy the term violin is synonymous with an “Amati-violin”.

Italian violins are known for the meticulous attention to detail that leads directly to their distinctive sound. Whether they are played in a jazz band, a world class symphony, or as a bluegrass fiddle, the warmth and style of the music will not fail to impress listeners.

Even if you use thousands of words, it will still not be enough to describe the beauty, style and quality of an “Amati violin“. How can you find words to describe the sound of the beautiful music produced from the hand-carved body of this Italian musical instrument? If you want to go on a musical journey to hear harmony and peace, go to a musical instrument store, which sells the famous Amati family fiddles, and your ears will thank you.

Ye Old Violin Shop features every type of Italian violin. If you’re browsing for violins, be sure to consider one of the fine copies of an Amati violin that are available.
