Could Stress be the Cause of Your Cat’s Strange Behavior?

Friday 22 August 2008 @ 2:08 am

Has your cat recently started to act a little strange? Perhaps it has started to act a little aggressively towards you or other family members? Or maybe it has become fearful of something or someone for no apparent reason? Whatever the strange behavior, it is important to get to the bottom of it before it develops any further.

What most cat owners don’t know is that the sudden changes in their cats behavior could be a result of stress. If you are like most cat owners and are not sure how to help your feline friend then here is a little helpful advice.

Understanding Stress in Cats

Just like many humans, animals are also sometimes vulnerable to stress. When something or someone new enters your cat’s territory, it can leave them feeling threatened. If they do feel uneasy then they are likely to start acting differently and this usually results in either aggression or withdrawal. Even the smallest of changes affects your cat. While some cats can successfully deal with change without any major problems, most will take any form of change really badly. So if you move, bring another pet into the home or bring another person into your cat’s life, it can really change your pet’s behavior.

However, it may not always be a change in your cat’s environment that brings out stress related problems. It could be that your cat has an illness that you are unaware of. It is always worth visiting your vet if its behavior does change and there have been no obvious changes in or around your home that could be the cause.

Now that you have identified the reasoning for your cats behavior, you are now ready to deal with it.

How to Deal with Feline Stress

Depending on what the stressor is, going to directly influence the action you will be taking. However, no matter what the stressor is, patience will be the key to overcoming it. Let’s say you’ve just moved homes. The action here would be to give your cat it’s own ‘room’. Their ‘room’ is going to be their safe place. You will only expose them to their room at first. After, you will gradually be introducing the rest of the house. You will have to leave their room available for them, so when they get overwhelmed or scared at any point they can run back and destress in their room, and if they know this is their safe place, they will be doing this automatically.

However, sometimes patience alone will not help. In these cases, it might be a good idea to purchase commercial products to help. Rescue Remedies can help to calm your cat and one particularly good one includes Bach Flower Essence. Helpful in both animals and humans, you should place 2-3 drops of the remedy into your cat’s drinking water. This should provide quick relief for your pet once it has drank it. However, not all cats will drink water with the remedy in it because the alcohol content can be too much. If this is the case, then you can always place the remedy behind the cat’s ears.

Overall, stress can be a contributing factor to your cat’s bad behavior. So if you notice that your cat has started to act strangely and if it has started to spray around the home or act more aggressive than usual then you should think about any changes that may have occurred in and around your home recently. Relieving your cat’s stress should eliminate sudden bad behavior problems. If all else fails then you should take your cat to the vet.

Friday 22 August 2008 @ 2:08 am

Out of all of the problems that your cat can develop, constant meowing has to be one of the most annoying. The sound of a cat meowing can really go straight through you. If you are unsure as to why the cat is meowing, then the problem is often made worse as it tends to get louder the more that they feel they are not being listened to.

If your cat is driving you mad with constant meowing and you are not sure what to do, read on to find out what the problem could be.

Why Cats Meow

There are a number of reasons why cats meow. Usually it is either when they are hungry or when they want to be let in or out of the home. However, other common reasons include:

1. Attention

2. They are in distress

Depending upon what is wrong with your cat, the meow will be slightly different. If they would like to go out for example, then the pitch of the meow will be lower usually than it would if your cat would like to be fed. The pitch of the meow will also depend entirely upon how badly the cat wants something. The more impatient they become, the louder the meow will be. By listening to your cat you will soon learn to distinguish between the different types of meow. That will then help you to determine what your cat actually wants.

How to Stop Constant Meowing

When your cat meows it’s not to irritate you. They need your attention, so ignoring them isn’t going to solve anything. Try to figure out their meows. Learn them. To reduce meowing for food. Have a set eating schedule. This way kitty knows when they eat and the won’t meow for food at unauthorized times.

After, you know your cat is meowing for food, make sure they have water. If that doesn’t do the trick, give them a little attention. Play with them. Your sweet kitty may just be lonely.

If your cat meows constanlty to go outside and then meows again to come back inside, you should install a cat flap on your door. (Otherwise known as a cat door.) This way your cat can go out and come back anytime they want. This should remove most of the cat meowing from your home.

Overall, there are a large number of reasons why your cat might be trying to get your attention. If all else fails then it would be a good idea to take your cat to the vets. It could be that your pet has an hidden illness that is causing them pain. Your vet will be able to look them over and give you advice on what could be the problem. If you follow these tips then you should easily be able to solve your cats meowing problem.

Bathroom Remodeling Helps You Increase The Value Of Your Home

Tuesday 19 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

Typically the easiest and most cost-effective way to add value to your house is to remodel your bathroom. There are a variety of ways to go about this, including adding a fresh coat of paint and selecting new accessories, to radical renovations that require installing all-new bathroom features. Whatever taste you bring to the freshening up of your bathroom’s aesthetic, this manner of home improvement will always increase the value of your home.

The first thing you should do when considering your plan is to create a budget. Remember to add incidentals into your costs, or all those “little things” can add up very quickly and blow your budget. Consider whether you will need to hire a plumber, get permits with your city or county, or hire a handy man to help you in the process. All of these “hidden” costs can sneak up on you and create problems if you don’t consider them in the beginning.

Once you have determined the size of your budget and the scope of your renovation, you need to select a theme. Although the upgrading of a bath is invariably a positive move, you don’t want to pick a design theme that doesn’t coordinate properly with the other spaces in your house, since that will decrease the worth of the property. The hues and styles should go with those throughout the house and particular with those of the areas nearest the bathroom.

One of the hardest, most challenging parts of this enterprise is the selection of a color for the bathroom. There are two basic opinions on this subject: the first is that you ought to pick a neutral shade, the second is that you should go with a hue that truly reflects your personality. The most effective decision will be made by thinking about the reason for your renovation.

Bathroom remodeling if you’re planning on selling is tricky; you might want to remain neutral. Keep colors light and pick tones that will complement many decors. Select fixtures to appeal to the majority of those who will look at the house. Accessorize to make the bathroom feel luxurious and plush so as to appeal to potential buyers.

If the bathroom remodeling is for you, and you do not plan to sell your home, you’ve got a lot more freedom to personalize the bathroom to fit your wants and needs. You may pick bold colors that suit your personal style and select fixtures which appeal just to you.

Bathroom remodeling can be a cost-effective way to add value to your home and make your home feel more customized to your particular style. Whether you do a complete bathroom overhaul or choose subtle changes, this particular home improvement is almost always an added asset to your home.

When remodeling your bathroom, you should consider your budget. Consider hidden costs such as plumbers, permits, or handymen. The next step is choosing a theme. It should fit in with the whole house or you’ll decrease its value. Choose complementary colors and styles that enhance the decor of all the rooms in your house. If you’re planning on selling; you might want to remain neutral. Choose light colors and tones that will complement many decors. If you don’t plan on selling, you’ll have more freedom to personalize the bathroom. Bathroom remodeling is a cost-effective way to increase your home’s value. This kind of home improvement is a great asset.

Enclosed Blinds - Give A New Look To Your Windows

Monday 18 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

There is now an alternative to mini blinds called enclosed blinds. Enclosed blinds are built into the framework of the window and you only need to use a lever to open and close the blinds. It gets rid of the headaches of tangled strings, low quality blinds and window clutter.

You will have to measure you window exactly for this kind of window treatment. The enclosed blind is designed to be a frame so that you do not have the little brackets for the top of the window, but an actual frame will be there. You can think of an enclosed blind like a storm window. It usually has a frame that fits in the window.

The lever on the frame lets you to open and close the blind with ease. While it does the work with the help of a string mechanism the strings are inside the frame and cannot get tangled. It is similar to the mini blinds with the strings interlaced between slats. The slates on the enclosed blinds can be unfastened for minimum light or completely opened for more light.

Believe it or not, the process of installing enclosed blinds is simpler than that for all of its more traditional counterparts. Since you only have to deal with a single piece, you can insert the blind directly adjacent to the window. The brackets fasten the blind by a direct connection to the window frame. The job couldn’t be simpler, and i guarantee you will not miss the noise and debris from the power drill.

Cover a window by putting one of the enclosed blinds on top of another. This will make the room darker for sleeping. You’ll end up with them on both window sashes, top and bottom. Usually these blinds are fairly indestructible even with kids around. You needn’t be concerned that your children will do damage to them or yank them from the windows or tangle their cords.

This kind of window covering can provide better protection from the sun’s rays, enabling you to nap in a darker room and to conserve electricity. While these blinds cost a bit more than normal mini-blinds, their long-lasting nature and attractive look mean that they’re a great value. To purchase these blinds, consult a local store that specializes in window blinds. (You’ll also be able to find patio door blinds at these locations.)

The name “bamboo shades” actually refers to shades many from many different lightweight materials. Such shades may be made from jute, reeds, rattan, or other similar materials. These shades are not very durable because they are so light. Many different kinds of such shades are on the market today, usually with cords you can pull to move them up or down. If you prefer a simple look for your home, you can easily find bamboo shades that will fit in with any decor. Many companies that make these shades will guarantee them with a written warranty.

Enclosed blinds are built into a framework and a simple lever is used to manipulate them. This product serves you well, keeping out unwanted light and heat. As with most environmentally friendly items, your first reaction might be to turn away at the initial expense. However, shop around locally and on the web, and you can locate these. Look closely and you can find patio door blinds while you are at it! You can also find bamboo shades that suit your taste from a manufacturer who offers a warranty on the shades. The natural look of bamboo window shades makes them a perfect option.

The Top Five Ways to Handle Feline Aggression

Monday 18 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

There are many people out there that believe cats are irritable and aggressive. Cat owners know that cats have a very loving, affectionate, and loyal side, even though the other side is independent, and at times a little ‘wild’. Their wild side often includes the cat being a little aggressive, making their loving owners the prey in their hunting games. So how are you supposed to deal with this type of aggressive behavior? Well, here are 5 quick tips on dealing with your overly excited pet friend.

1. Know Your Cat

Before you can deal with any problem you need to first understand it. No animal acts a certain way without a reason. The first thing that you need to understand about your cat is that it is a hunter. You may feed them canned food, give them plenty of love and spend hours playing with them, but their instinct is to hunt and kill. Even the most domestic of cats will still try to hunt whenever they can. So you need to understand that there will be times when your pet does turn into a slightly more aggressive, moody character.

Now, that you know about the instinct to hunt, you will need to start noticing when they are in hunt mode and avoid them. Cats have schedules so notice what time of day they tend to be in this state most often. This will help you from being the prey in their hunting games. Then, you can just wait until your cat has settled down and turned back into the loving, affectionate, house cat you love to play with. However, if your cat seems to be getting more aggressive or is aggressive all the time then could be steming from something more serious and needs to be attended to promply. Your cat may be suffering from serious stress from recent changes in their lives or even illness. Have them checked by a vet as soon as you can to rule out any health issues.

2. Be Patient

If there has been a change in circumstance and your cat is feeling threatened then it is important to be patient. You should never force your cat into a situation no matter how much you think it might help. That will only make the problem worse. Instead you need to be extremely patient and allow your cat to take things at their own speed. If you do not force your cat into anything then they should not turn on you.

3. Never Allow ANY Biting

When your cat is a kitten it can be fun and even cute to let them nibble on your hand. However, when your kitten becomes a cat this behavior won’t be cute or fun anymore. If you would like to avoid your cat aggressively biting you then don’t let them bite you ever. Even the slightest nip is still biting in your cats mind. If they bite you, even when you are playing, then yell ‘OUCH’. If you do it loud enough it will shock your cat to where they are no longer biting you and they will think before doing it again. Remember, this can’t be done just once and have your cat understand. It must be done everytime they bite. In a short time they will get the idea.

4. Be Persistent

As well as being patient, you also need to be persistent in your training. This means repeating yourself and ensuring that your cat knows exactly what you expect from them. For example, you cannot tell your cat off one day for behaving a certain way and then let them get away with it the day after. That will only confuse your cat and you will never stop the aggression problem.

5. Socialize Your Pet

Socializing your cat works best the younger the cat is. So as soon as you bring your cat home, start socializing them. Introduce them to as many different types of people, dogs, and other cats as you as able too. Introduce them to any other animals you think they will encounter in life. The more your cat familiarize themselves with those people, dogs, cats, or other animals the less likely it will be for them to be scared when they are all grown up.

Rent Back House For You

Saturday 16 August 2008 @ 1:08 am

Purchasing a house for your residence is among the biggest monetary commitments a lot of people undertake in the course of their lives. Most homes are purchased with mortgages, since the majority of people lack the available funds to purchase the property with cash. By acquiring a mortgage, they are able to make the monthly payments from their earnings and repay their home loan eventually.

But many people find themselves in unfortunate position and face negative lifestyle changes like divorce, job loss, debt or other financial problem. This may lead to making the mortgage payments a bit complicated to handle because lenders want their money every month. In such situations, the decision to rent back house will often turn out to be useful.

The rent back house solution gives the house owners the opportunity to put up for sale their existing home and then they can rent it back from the purchaser at a cost they may afford. If you do enough research, then you may notice that there are some buyers who even give the alternative for the original house owners to purchase back the house after a certain period of time.

This may be the ideal solution for those people who desire to stay in their own house. They can as well have a secure and debt free life. Normally, real estate companies which offer this rent back house option will take care of all the required official and administrative bills.

The rental amount generally is kept to a level that is reasonable and is normally less than the mortgage payments that you are giving. The requirement of sale and rent back plans is increasing day by day. You will see that the sale may take much less time compared to the regular sales.

This is due to the fact that experts in the property sector attempt to attract salespeople who invest a lot of energy in this and want to make a quick sale. Frequently the buyers get the home using cash, which expedites the procedure.

Although different lenders in the mortgage business have varying sets of standards, the repossession process is usually begun after the loan is two or three months in arrears. There are ways to stop repossession, however, one of which is the house rent back service. This is an appealing alternative to having your home repossessed, and companies that offer this can explain how it works.

Very few people have the money to purchase a house outright; everyone else will have to buy using a mortgage. A rent back house strategy provides the homeowner the chance to offer for sale their current residence and subsequently be able to rent it back from the buyer at an affordable price. Sell and buy back appeals to people who are vulnerable to repossession. Different lenders who are in the mortgage business have different set of standards, but normally they start the repossession procedure two or three months after the arrears are found. The companies that offer the house rent back service can explain to you how to stop repossession.

5 Simple Steps To Toilet Training Your Cat

Friday 15 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

Litter training is a simple solution to the alternative which is running over and letting them out of the house whenever they need to relieve themselves. Then, you have to hope you are home during these times. Yes, a litter trained cat is much easier to live with.

However, litter trays can be messy to clean and they can also start to smell too. For that reason, many owners often look into different ways of housetraining their cat. One method which seems to be popular with some owners is toilet training. Here you will find the top five ways to toilet train your cat. It may sound silly, but toilet training might actually be the best thing that you ever teach your cat!

1. Newspaper Training Box

Your cat must be trained to use a litterbox before it can use the toilet. Make sure you use newspaper in their litterbox when litterbox training and after. It comes in handy later, since litter cannot be flushed down, and newspaper can. The closer to the bathroom or toilet they will be using will help later on in the five step process.

2. Gradually Move the Litter Tray

Since cats are creatures of habit it is not a good idea to move their box quickly. They may lose where it is or refuse to use it at all. So, you will have to move the box in stages. Think of the box as if it were walking to the toilet. Everyday scoot the box a little closer to the toilet. (Or whenever you notice your cat is comfortable to where you moved it previously.)

3. Lower the Litter Tray Sides

As you move the box closer to the toilet then you need to trim down the sides of the box. Since the box needs to be as similar to the toilet as possible. If you don’t trim the box down your cat will notice the drastic difference. (Use caution when using a plastic litterbox. Make sure when you cut it down that it does not have any sharp edges.)

Remember as you move the box lower the edges. Do this gradually so that kitty doesn’t notice you disrupting their everyday routine.

4. Put The Litterbox In The Toilet

Now that you have done all the past three steps and the box has gradually made it’s way to the toilet. You are now ready to put the box into the toilet. You will do this by tying the box inside of the toilet. Make sure when you tie the box inside the toilet that it is tied tight. If it were to fall in while your cat was using it, it will scare them and they may never come to use it again. Now it’s time for a little patience. Leave the box in the toilet until you notice your cat has become completely comfortable with the new situation. When your cat has adjusted then, move on to step five.

5. Cut a Hole in the Tray

The last step is simple. Just cut a hole in the bottom of the box. This is so kitty gets use to the water at the bottom of the toilet, and whatever kitty does will fall into the toilet. After kitty adjusts to this you can remove the box all together, and your cat will be toilet trained, and you a happy cat owner.

How To Solve Cat Scratching Behavior

Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 12:08 am

Most people believe that when you own a cat no training is necessary. Well, soon after owning a cat they find out different, and the surprise of living with their beloved pet can become frustrating.

There are a number of problems that your cat could develop and a common one includes scratching. It is in your cat’s nature to scratch, but just how do you stop them from ruining your favorite furniture?

Understanding Your Cats Need to Scratch

Cats scratch things for mainly two reasons. The first is that they are naturally keeping their claws down as well as sharpening them at the same time. The claws grow constantly and they do need to be kept under control. They are a vital part of a cat’s body as obviously they would usually use them to hunt. This hunting instinct is extremely strong in all cats and so they tend to constantly scratch usually wooden objects in order to help them to keep their claws in the best hunting condition.

Reason number two is that all cats mark their territory, and scratching is just one of the ways they do that. They have scent glands in their paws, that leave their scent on what they just scratched to let other animals know it’s their turf. That’s why a cat will scratch more often if another cat or any animal for that matter is introduced into the home.

Preventing Problem Scratching

Since it is in their nature to scratch it can not be stopped completely. However, if you want to stop them from scratching furiture or other objects, you can always buy a proper scratching post. These can be found in any reliable pet store, or if you choose to you can even make your own.

Ensure that you place the scratching post in a place where all of the family goes. The idea is to let the cat think that they are still marking their territory. After all, they are not going to want to scratch the post if it is hidden away because that would not be sending out a message. The cat is looking to show their dominance of that area and so the post should be somewhere on view.

If you have a problem with your cat using the scratching post, there is a few solutions. You can hang toys from it so your cat while playing marks the post as theirs. Get catnip and rub it on the scratching post. Make it part of your cats life. Feed them by it, and play with them by it. This will make it so your cat becomes possessive of it.

To be successful, you must remain persistent. If your cat scratches something it shouldn’t, always reprimand the cat. When your cat scratches the post, reward them. Always start this training as soon as you are able. The younger the cat the more successful this training is.

Sell And Rent Back: Is It Right For You?

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 1:08 am

The market for housing today is in crisis. A number of people are confronting repossession or foreclosure of their home, just as they believed they were happily settled there. With rates for mortgages increasing, even dual income families are having a hard time making ends meet. When confronted with losing your house, it might appear that your life is over, particularly if you head a family or have small children.

There are many more options available to the struggling homeowner today than there was in the past. You may be surprised to find that it is easier to reside in your home, even while facing dismal financial circumstances. Educate yourself about the many sell and rent back programs that are available. Given the rampant fore-closure rates these programs have been set up to benefit all kinds of people and you may qualify for one. This opportunity may well allow you the freedom to remain in the home that you cheri

It isn’t difficult to comprehend how these arrangements work. If you can’t keep up with your monthly loan payments, you’ll need to give up your house by selling it. Then, if it is bought by an individual investor or an investment firm, it would have to be rented. In a sell and rent back scheme, you are the one they rent it to. That means less expended time and effort for them and for you the chance to remain where you really want to be.

On the market today are a number of “homes for rent back“. Policies that let you “sell and rent back” are terrific for people from both perspectives. If they want to invest in real estate, they may decide to purchase your property and then rent it back to you, which might be your best option. If you have an apartment you may also enter into a “rent back apartment” plan.

The concept of sell and rent back programs is not a new one. It is common practice in commercial real estate in order to create tax advantages and to acquire capital for reinvestment. Property sold can be leased back from the buyer on a long term basis.

For most, the sell and rent back system is a brilliant technique insofar as it keeps you in your residence while allowing investors to reap the benefits of profits. This technique also keeps homes in the hands of citizens and out of the hands of financial intitutions. As a result, the benefits are clearly and overwhelmingly evident. It is best not to watin until foreclosure has occured or is right around the corner. The best course of action is to explore options early when seeking help.

Today’s economy has set a downward spiral for homeowners or those seeking to buy one. The American dream of being able to own a home is now a depressing thought to any family. The sell and rent back program is one way to keep people in their homes while allowing investors to profit. Renting from a landlord is the safest way to keep your home out of the hands of the bank. You better try this program before your home goes into foreclosure. There are also lots of different homes for rent back on the market. You can even rent back apartment if you own one.
